Andrysiak “on-DRISH-ak” comes from the first name Andrezej (the Polish version of Andrew), which over the centuries has appeared in Polish in many forms. To one of those forms, Andrys, the suffix -iak was added; it generally mans “son of”, so Andrysiak means “Andrew’s Son” (compare “Anderson” in English).
Surnames formed from first names are quite common in Poland, so its not surprising that this name is reasonable common. As of 1990 there were 1,793 Polish citizens by that name.
We have not yet researched this line in depth yet, but here is what we know:
Jozef Andrysiak- 1851 to 1932
Jozef Andrysiak was born in Prussian Poland on February 22, 1851. He had one
known sister Josephine, and two known brothers, Lawrence and Casimir.
About 1875, in Prussian Poland, he married Antionette Damach. She was born on June 12, 1851, somewhere in Poland.
Over the next 6 years they had at least 3 children: Francesca and Stanley, Michael.
From his obituary we know that he immigrated in 1880/81. We do not yet have an exact date or a ship, but that will come.
Over the next 17 years they had 8 more children: Mary, Hattie, Adelbert, Casimir, Sophia, Carrie, Katherine and Helen.
The 1900 census shows us that they owned their own home at 706 Union Ave. in South Bend IN. It states that they had been married for 25 years, (giving us 1875) and that Antionette had had 12 children, but that only 11 were living.
Neather Jozef or Antionette could speak English, however all of the children could.
Jozef was a day laborer, Michael was a wagon painter, Stanley was a day laborer and his daughters Mary, Hattie and Katherine were all seamstresses.
Jozef passed away on May 28, 1932 at the age of 81 in South Bend, IN. His funeral was in St. Casimir's and she was put to rest in St. Joseph's Cemetery in South Bend.
Antionette passed away on July 26, 1937 at the age of 86 in South Bend, IN. Her funeral was in St. Casimir's and she was put to rest in St. Joseph's Cemetery in South Bend.
